Rice Straw Pulping: Converting Asia's Most Abundant Agricultural Waste into Paper
Asia produces over 700 million tonnes of rice annually, generating approximately 700 million tonnes of straw — most of which is field-burned, causing severe air quality episodes across India, China, Pakistan, and Southeast Asia. Rajshree Group's rice straw pulp mill technology converts this environmental liability into a sustainable paper fibre resource, providing farmers with a commercial alternative to burning and paper mills with a locally available, low-cost raw material independent of global wood pulp price cycles.
Rice straw pulping presents unique technical challenges: high silica content (8–12% of dry weight, versus 0.1–0.5% in wood) requires dedicated silica management in the cooking and chemical recovery stages; short, weak fibres require careful refining to develop adequate paper strength; and straw collection and baling logistics demand coordination with seasonal harvesting windows. Rajshree has addressed all of these challenges in our rice straw pulp mill designs for Punjab, Haryana, and UP-based clients in India.
Our soda-anthraquinone (soda-AQ) cooking process for rice straw achieves kappa numbers of 8–14 at cooking temperatures of 155–165°C — producing bleachable pulp with brightness achievable to 78–82% ISO through a CEH bleaching sequence. The cooking chemical (sodium hydroxide) is recovered through a dedicated rice straw chemical recovery loop that manages silica precipitation separately from the main evaporator train.
Rajshree has developed a farmer engagement model for rice straw collection — working with aggregators within 50 km radius of the mill to collect, bale, and transport straw at a fair farmgate price. This creates rural livelihood income while giving the mill a predictable, costed fibre supply — a model successfully operating at two Rajshree-commissioned mills in northern India.
