Pulp Screening: Removing Contaminants Before They Reach the Paper Machine
Unscreened pulp contains shives (uncooked fibre bundles), sand and grit, bark particles, and plastic debris — all of which cause paper breaks, wire and fabric damage, and visible defects in the finished paper. Pulp screening — the removal of these contaminants by passing the stock through precision-slotted or perforated screens — is a non-negotiable step between pulp production and paper machine approach flow. Rajshree Group's screening systems are engineered for maximum contaminant removal at minimum fibre loss and energy consumption.
Rajshree's screening systems use pressurised centrifugal screens with rotating foil elements that sweep the screen basket surface, creating pressure pulses that maintain open screen slots without fibre blinding. Slot widths are matched to the target paper grade: 0.15–0.20 mm for fine paper and tissue, 0.25–0.35 mm for kraft liner and board. The reject fraction (typically 2–5% of feed) is processed through a secondary and sometimes tertiary screen to minimise fibre loss before final reject disposal.
For recycled fibre mills, Rajshree's screening system design includes heavy contaminant removal (cleaners for sand and plastics), coarse drum screens for staples and clips, fine pressure screens for shive removal, and froth flotation deinking cells for newsprint recycling. The complexity of the recycled fibre cleaning system is directly proportional to the contamination level of the incoming waste paper grade — Rajshree sizes each section based on actual incoming fibre analysis.
Rajshree's two-stage screening systems (primary + secondary screen) achieve shive removal efficiency of 98–99.5% from kraft chemical pulp, and 95–98% from recycled fibre stock — consistently below 0.03% shive content in the screen accept flow, which is the typical paper machine approach flow quality requirement.
