Sodium Chlorate: The Critical Precursor to ClO₂ Bleaching in Modern Kraft Mills

Sodium chlorate (NaClO₃) is the primary raw material for chlorine dioxide (ClO₂) generation — the dominant bleaching chemical in modern ECF (Elemental Chlorine Free) kraft pulp mills globally. As India and African markets upgrade from older CEH (Chlorination, Extraction, Hypochlorite) bleaching sequences to ECF technology — driven by environmental regulations and export market requirements — the demand for on-site sodium chlorate production capacity is growing rapidly.

Sodium chlorate is produced electrolytically from brine (sodium chloride solution) using dimensionally stable anodes (DSA) in membrane-free electrochemical cells. The process is well-established, energy-efficient (consuming approximately 4,500–5,500 kWh per tonne of NaClO₃), and produces a product of consistent quality. On-site production eliminates dependence on external NaClO₃ supply — critical in markets like Nigeria, Tanzania, and Kenya where imported chemical availability can be unpredictable.

Rajshree Group supplies complete sodium chlorate electrolytic plants from 3 to 50 tonnes/day NaClO₃ capacity, sized to the ClO₂ generation requirements of the bleach plant. Our plants include brine purification, electrolytic cell trains with titanium-DSA electrodes, crystallisation or solution storage, and connection to the downstream ClO₂ plant. We handle the full integration from electrical rectifier to product storage.

⚗️ Brine-to-ClO₂ Integration

Rajshree designs integrated brine-to-chlorate-to-ClO₂ chemical plants where all three sections share a common utility infrastructure, control philosophy, and safety system — reducing capital cost by 15–20% versus separate plant designs and providing seamless automatic operation from sodium chloride salt to bleaching-grade ClO₂ solution.

Frequently Asked Questions

Sodium chlorate (NaClO₃) is the primary feedstock for on-site chlorine dioxide (ClO₂) generation in the bleach plant. ClO₂ is the key bleaching agent in ECF (Elemental Chlorine Free) bleaching, which is the global standard for producing high-brightness kraft pulp. Sodium chlorate is produced by electrolysis of saturated sodium chloride (salt) solution.
Rajshree supplies sodium chlorate electrolysis plants from 1 TPD to 30 TPD (100% NaClO₃ basis), designed to match the ClO₂ plant's feedstock consumption. The plant capacity is sized based on the pulp mill's bleaching stage ClO₂ consumption and the desired on-site versus purchased chlorate mix.
In the ClO₂ generator (SVP-HP or R8 process), NaClO₃ is reacted with methanol (or SO₂) and sulphuric acid at 65–70°C. The ClO₂ gas generated is absorbed in cold water to produce 8–10 g/L ClO₂ solution, which is fed directly to the bleach tower. Rajshree supplies both the sodium chlorate plant and the ClO₂ generator as an integrated package.
Sodium chlorate is a strong oxidiser and fire/explosion hazard if contaminated with organic material. Rajshree's plant designs include: explosion-proof electrical classification throughout, hydrogen gas venting and detection systems (H₂ is a byproduct of electrolysis), NaClO₃ storage in dedicated, chemically compatible tanks with bunding, and fire suppression systems. All designs comply with Indian Factory Act and IS standards.
Yes. Rajshree supplies integrated chlorine chemistry packages combining the sodium chlorate electrolysis plant, ClO₂ generator, and associated storage and dosing systems. This integrated supply gives the mill complete feedstock independence, eliminates external NaClO₃ procurement, and reduces the total cost of ClO₂ production by 20–35% versus purchasing sodium chlorate commercially.
