Sodium Chlorate: The Critical Precursor to ClO₂ Bleaching in Modern Kraft Mills
Sodium chlorate (NaClO₃) is the primary raw material for chlorine dioxide (ClO₂) generation — the dominant bleaching chemical in modern ECF (Elemental Chlorine Free) kraft pulp mills globally. As India and African markets upgrade from older CEH (Chlorination, Extraction, Hypochlorite) bleaching sequences to ECF technology — driven by environmental regulations and export market requirements — the demand for on-site sodium chlorate production capacity is growing rapidly.
Sodium chlorate is produced electrolytically from brine (sodium chloride solution) using dimensionally stable anodes (DSA) in membrane-free electrochemical cells. The process is well-established, energy-efficient (consuming approximately 4,500–5,500 kWh per tonne of NaClO₃), and produces a product of consistent quality. On-site production eliminates dependence on external NaClO₃ supply — critical in markets like Nigeria, Tanzania, and Kenya where imported chemical availability can be unpredictable.
Rajshree Group supplies complete sodium chlorate electrolytic plants from 3 to 50 tonnes/day NaClO₃ capacity, sized to the ClO₂ generation requirements of the bleach plant. Our plants include brine purification, electrolytic cell trains with titanium-DSA electrodes, crystallisation or solution storage, and connection to the downstream ClO₂ plant. We handle the full integration from electrical rectifier to product storage.
Rajshree designs integrated brine-to-chlorate-to-ClO₂ chemical plants where all three sections share a common utility infrastructure, control philosophy, and safety system — reducing capital cost by 15–20% versus separate plant designs and providing seamless automatic operation from sodium chloride salt to bleaching-grade ClO₂ solution.
