Wood Handling Systems: From Forest Gate to Digester Feed

The wood handling system is the physical link between the forest and the pulp mill digester — and its reliability determines whether the digester runs at design capacity or starves for raw material. Rajshree Group designs complete wood handling systems — from log truck receiving through debarking, chipping, chip screening, and chip storage — as integrated systems with matched capacities at every stage, eliminating the bottlenecks that plague mills where individual sections were designed and supplied separately.

A properly designed wood handling system accounts for the real-world variability that theoretical designs often ignore: seasonal changes in log moisture content (affecting chip yield and conveyor loading), mixed-species deliveries with varying log diameters (affecting debarker retention time), truck arrival patterns (requiring surge capacity in the log yard), and tropical rainfall events (requiring covered storage and drainage-designed log piles). Rajshree's field experience across India, Nigeria, Kenya, and Tanzania has shaped all of these variables into our standard design protocols.

Wood chip quality — particularly chip thickness uniformity — is the single most important process parameter entering the digester. Rajshree's chipping and screening system is designed to deliver chip acceptance rates of 85–90% (material within target thickness) and fines content below 3% — benchmarks that directly translate to consistent kappa number and high pulp yield from the digester. Every stage of the wood handling system is designed in service of this final chip quality target.

🌳 Integrated System Thinking

Rajshree's wood handling system design starts from the digester chip consumption rate and works backward — sizing chip silo, screen, chipper, debarker, and log yard at each stage with matched throughput and adequate buffer storage. This ensures no single section creates a bottleneck that would starve or flood the adjacent stage.

Frequently Asked Questions

A complete wood handling system from Rajshree includes: log truck unloading ramps, log infeed decks and chain conveyors, log cross-conveyors, debarker (ring or drum type), drum chipper with chip throw conveyor, chip screening (oversize scalper, fines screen), chip conveying system, and chip storage bins with level controls for the digester feed. The system is designed as an integrated matched set.
Rajshree's systems are configured for the specific wood supply of each mill: plantation eucalyptus, acacia, poplar, bamboo (as logs), mixed tropical hardwoods, or softwood species. Equipment specifications — chipper knife geometry, debarker tool type, screen aperture size — are all configured to optimise chip quality from the target species.
Rajshree supplies wood handling systems from 5 ODT/hr to 50 ODT/hr (oven-dry tonnes per hour), sized to match the pulp mill digester feed rate. For a 50 TPD pulp mill operating one shift, a chipper capacity of 8–12 ODT/hr with chip bin surge storage is standard. Larger mills or multi-shift operations are served by proportionally larger systems or parallel chipper lines.
Rajshree designs wood yards with a linear material flow: truck entry → unloading → log decks → debarker → chipper → screening → chip bin → digester. The layout minimises cross-traffic, allows efficient log yard inventory management, and places the chip bin adjacent to the digester building. Road widths, turning radii, and drainage are all specified in the civil design package.
Yes. Rajshree designs systems to handle both round log and wood chip feed for mills that use a combination of captive plantation wood and purchased chips. A chip bypass conveyor routes purchased chips directly to the chip bin, bypassing the debarker and chipper. Chip quality control (size analysis, moisture) is performed at the incoming chip acceptance station.
