Kraft vs Sulphite Pulping: Choosing the Right Chemistry for Your Mill

Chemical pulping is the backbone of premium paper manufacturing. The choice between kraft (sulphate) and sulphite chemistry determines your raw material flexibility, pulp strength profile, bleachability, and chemical recovery economics. Rajshree Group's process engineers work with you to evaluate both options against your specific fibre source, target paper grade, and investment budget.

Kraft pulping — using sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and sodium sulphide (Na₂S) as cooking liquor — is the globally dominant process for a reason: it handles nearly all wood species and many agro-fibres, produces strong pulp with excellent bonding properties, and allows efficient chemical recovery through the Tomlinson recovery boiler cycle. Sulphite pulping, using sulphurous acid and bisulphite, produces brighter pulp with better absorbency — ideal for tissue, dissolving pulp, and specialty applications.

Rajshree has designed and commissioned both kraft and sulphite pulping lines across India, Africa, and the Middle East. Our in-house process simulation tools model delignification kinetics and H-factor to predict pulp quality outcomes before a single piece of equipment is ordered — reducing commissioning risk and shortening the time to stable production.

⚗️ Process Design Depth

Rajshree's chemical pulping designs include full mass and energy balance calculations, white liquor preparation sizing, cooking liquor impregnation analysis, and kappa number prediction across the digester cycle. This engineering depth ensures your mill achieves target pulp quality from the first production run.

Frequently Asked Questions

Rajshree's chemical pulping systems process a wide range of raw materials: wood (softwood and hardwood), sugarcane bagasse, wheat straw, rice straw, kenaf, bamboo, and other agro-fibres. The pulping process (kraft or soda) and cooking conditions are specifically designed for each raw material to achieve optimal pulp yield and quality.
Kraft pulping uses sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and sodium sulphide (Na₂S), producing high-strength pulp and requiring a full chemical recovery system with a recovery boiler. Soda pulping uses NaOH only — it is simpler, has lower capital cost, and is well-suited for agro-residues. Rajshree supplies both processes, recommending kraft for wood-based and soda for agro-based mills.
For bleachable-grade bagasse or agro-fibre pulp, Rajshree's cooking systems target a kappa number of 14–18. For unbleached kraft packaging pulp from wood, the target is 30–50. Precise kappa number control is achieved through H-factor management in our DCS-based digester control system, ensuring consistent pulp quality batch to batch.
Chemical recovery is strongly recommended for economic and environmental reasons. Without recovery, spent cooking liquor (black liquor) must be treated as waste — at significant cost. With recovery, 90–97% of chemicals are reclaimed and reused, and steam generated in the recovery boiler provides most of the mill's energy needs.
Yes. Rajshree has successfully converted several semi-chemical mills to full kraft pulping, upgrading the cooking systems, adding brown stock washing, and integrating chemical recovery. We assess the existing equipment, identify reusable assets, and design the conversion in phases to minimise production downtime during the upgrade.
