Rice Straw: India's Most Abundant Untapped Pulp Resource
Rice straw pulp mill machinery converts rice straw into paper-grade pulp using soda-AQ cooking, washing, screening and optional chemical recovery. India generates approximately 140 million tonnes of rice straw annually — the second largest agricultural residue stream after sugarcane bagasse. Most of it is burned in-field, particularly in Punjab, Haryana, and western UP after the kharif rice harvest in October–November, creating severe air quality problems that have triggered national regulatory attention and burning bans. Converting rice straw from a disposal problem to a pulp raw material is both environmentally beneficial and commercially attractive for paper mills in India's major rice-growing regions.
Rice straw fibre is a short hardwood-equivalent fibre (0.5–1.5 mm length) with cellulose content of 32–38% — comparable to hardwood, though with a higher silica content (10–18%) that creates specific process challenges. Bleached rice straw pulp at 78–84 ISO brightness is suitable for writing paper, newsprint, and tissue base grades. For kraft paper grades, unbleached rice straw pulp at kappa 18–25 gives acceptable strength for corrugating medium and liner when blended with 20–30% softwood pulp.
The economics are compelling for mills within 80–120 km of major rice production areas. Rice straw costs INR 1,000–2,500/tonne baled and delivered — a fraction of imported BHKP costs — making rice straw pulp among India's lowest raw material cost pulp options when logistics are manageable.
Rice straw is available in a narrow 60-day window after harvest (October–November for kharif). A 50 ODT/day pulp mill requires approximately 40,000–50,000 tonnes of dry straw annually — all collected in 60 days and stored for 10 months of year-round operation. Storage design is not secondary — it is as critical as the pulping equipment.

Collection, Baling, and Storage
Reliable straw collection within the harvest window is the single biggest operational challenge for rice straw pulp mills. Unlike bagasse (which is generated continuously at the sugar mill) or wood (which can be harvested year-round), rice straw is available in a 60-day pulse after the kharif harvest. A mill running 330 days/year must collect and store 330 days' worth of straw in 60 days.
Round baling (400–500 kg bales) or rectangular baling (200–250 kg bales) using contractor-operated balers in the field is the most practical collection approach for small and medium mills. Baling density of 150–180 kg OD/m³ allows manageable storage in a covered dry shed. For a 50 ODT/day pulp mill, the covered straw storage area must be approximately 25,000–35,000 m³ — requiring 1.5–2.5 acres of covered shed on the mill site.
Storage of wet or partially wet straw causes rapid quality degradation through microbial decomposition and heating, reducing pulp yield and creating fire risk. All straw storage at the mill must be covered, ventilated, and designed with adequate drainage to prevent moisture accumulation in the bale stack. A rice straw pulp mill without adequate covered storage capacity will run out of raw material by June–July — shutting down at full fixed cost with no production. Size storage for 11 months of raw material at design mill capacity. This is expensive civil investment (INR 4–8 crore for 50 ODT/day mill) but has no acceptable alternative.

Silica: The Key Process Challenge
Rice straw contains 10–18% silica (SiO₂) as dry weight — far higher than wood (0.1–0.5%) or bagasse (2–3%). Silica dissolves in the alkaline cooking liquor as sodium silicate (waterglass), which causes serious scaling problems in the evaporators if the black liquor is sent to chemical recovery. This is the primary reason why rice straw black liquor management requires different equipment design than wood or bagasse black liquor.
For small mills (below 30 ODT/day), the practical solution is to not attempt chemical recovery — treat the dilute black liquor biologically in an aerated lagoon system after dilution and pH adjustment. This approach sacrifices the cooking chemical cost but avoids the capital cost of silica-handling evaporators. Above 50 ODT/day, chemical recovery becomes economically essential, requiring forced-circulation falling-film evaporators with anti-silica design features.
Silica also causes deposit problems in the digester steam connections, wash water heat exchangers, and causticising plant if not managed. Rajshree designs rice straw pulp mill chemical circuits with silica management as a primary design criterion — not an afterthought.
The difference between a profitable rice straw pulp mill and one with constant operating problems is the quality of silica management in the black liquor circuit. Never compromise on evaporator design for rice straw black liquor — the capital saving on a conventional evaporator is recovered in 6–12 months of scale-induced downtime.

Rice straw is cooked using soda-AQ process at 14–16% active alkali (as NaOH), maximum temperature 160–165°C, and H-factor 400–600 for bleachable grade. Screened pulp yield is 38–44% on OD straw — slightly lower than bagasse due to rice straw's lower cellulose content and higher silica. AQ addition at 0.05–0.1% is essential for the same yield improvement reasons as for bagasse.
After cooking, the pulp is washed on vacuum drum washers (3 stages) and screened through pressure screens with 0.15–0.2 mm slots. Rice straw produces more shives per tonne of pulp than bagasse or wood, requiring a robust screening system with adequate accepts and rejects handling capacity. Accepts yield loss in screening is 4–7% for rice straw, slightly higher than for wood pulps.
Bleached rice straw pulp achieves 78–84 ISO with standard ECF bleaching (D0-Eop-D1 sequence). For writing paper applications, a brightness of 80–82 ISO is achievable with standard furnish; for premium grades, BSKP blending improves both brightness ceiling and strength. Rice straw tissue pulp (target 82+ ISO, low shive content) requires more intensive cooking and washing than writing paper grade — Rajshree designs the system for the target grade from the process design stage.
Bleached rice straw pulp: 78–84 ISO brightness, tensile index 40–55 Nm/g, tear index 5.5–8.0 mN·m²/g. As a substitute for BHKP in writing paper at 60–70% blend with BSKP: performance is equivalent for maplitho and offset printing grades. For high-brightness copier paper (86+ ISO), rice straw pulp needs supplementation with higher-brightness wood pulp or OBA treatment beyond standard levels.

Business Case: 30 ODT/Day Rice Straw Pulp Mill
A 30 ODT/day rice straw pulp mill in Punjab or Haryana, processing 2,500–3,000 tonnes/month of rice straw at INR 1,500/tonne delivered, produces approximately 340 tonnes/month of bleached pulp. Sold at INR 22,000/tonne to nearby writing paper mills (at a discount to imported BHKP of INR 45,000/tonne, making it commercially attractive to paper mill buyers), monthly revenue is INR 7.5 crore.
Total production cost — straw, chemicals, steam, power, labour, maintenance — runs INR 14,000–18,000/tonne of bleached pulp, giving EBITDA of INR 4,000–8,000/tonne or INR 1.4–2.7 crore/month. With project capex of INR 40–60 crore (30 ODT/day rice straw pulp mill, no recovery), EBITDA payback is 2–4 years.
The caveat: silica management complexity means rice straw pulp mills have higher operator skill requirements and more frequent process chemistry attention than bagasse or wood pulp mills. This is manageable with proper training — but must be factored into operating plan, staffing, and commissioning scope.
30 ODT/day rice straw pulp mill: INR 40–60 crore capex, INR 1.4–2.7 crore/month EBITDA, payback 2–4 years. The raw material cost advantage over imported BHKP (INR 14,000–18,000/tonne production cost vs INR 45,000–55,000/tonne BHKP import cost) makes rice straw pulp one of the most cost-competitive fibre alternatives available to Indian paper mills in the rice belt.
