Pulp Refining: Developing Fibre Bonding for Superior Paper Strength
Refining is the mechanical treatment of pulp fibres immediately before paper making — a step that dramatically influences the bonding strength, surface characteristics, and printability of the finished paper. In a refiner, pulp fibres pass between rotating and stationary bar-and-groove plates at precise gap settings, causing fibrillation (surface abrasion that opens fibre cell walls), internal delamination (increasing flexibility), and cutting (reducing fibre length). The right balance of these effects for each paper grade is what Rajshree's refining systems are engineered to deliver.
Refining intensity — measured as specific edge load (J/m) or net refining energy (kWh/tonne) — is the primary control variable. Too little refining produces weak paper with poor printability; too much refining causes over-hydration, high drainage resistance on the paper machine wire, and energy waste. Rajshree's refining systems include online freeness (CSF) monitoring at the refiner discharge, with automatic energy setpoint adjustment to maintain target freeness regardless of incoming pulp variability.
Rajshree supplies disc refiners and conical refiners in single and twin configurations for stock preparation in kraft paper, writing paper, and tissue lines. Plate segment selection — the most critical consumable in a refining system — is application-specific; Rajshree's application engineers specify segment bar angle, groove width, and bar width based on fibre species, target paper grade, and desired refining curve.
Rajshree's twin-disc refiners with variable-gap control achieve specific refining energy of 40–80 kWh/tonne for kraft pulp development to target freeness — 15–20% lower than comparable single-disc or conical refiner configurations for the same paper strength outcome, directly reducing the mill's power consumption per tonne of paper produced.
