Tertiary Treatment: From Compliance to Reuse-Grade Water
As Indian environmental regulations tighten and groundwater availability decreases, paper mills are under growing pressure to reduce freshwater intake and move toward closed-loop water systems. Tertiary effluent treatment — the polishing stage after biological secondary treatment — is the bridge between compliance and reuse. Rajshree Group designs tertiary systems that transform secondary-treated effluent into water clean enough for reuse in non-critical mill processes, significantly reducing raw water consumption.
Paper mill tertiary challenges centre on colour removal — lignin degradation products from kraft cooking and bleaching produce persistent brown colouration that biological treatment cannot fully remove. Rajshree's tertiary systems use coagulation-flocculation with specialised colour-removal coagulants, followed by dissolved air flotation (DAF) or multimedia pressure filtration, to achieve colour below 150 Hazen units — the threshold for reuse in most mill applications.
For ZLD applications, Rajshree adds membrane filtration (ultrafiltration + reverse osmosis) after colour removal to produce permeate water suitable for boiler makeup, cooling tower, or direct process reuse. The RO concentrate — a small, high-strength stream — is then sent to a multiple-effect evaporator or spray dryer for final volume reduction and salt recovery.
A well-designed tertiary system can enable a paper mill to reuse 40–60% of its treated effluent volume for wood yard washing, vacuum pump sealing water, or ash handling — cutting freshwater intake and reducing surface water withdrawal consents needed from state water authorities.
