On-Site HCl Production: Reliability and Cost Stability for Paper Mills
Hydrochloric acid is consumed in paper mills for multiple process functions: acid washing of pulp before bleaching to remove metal ions that would otherwise consume bleaching chemicals and reduce brightness, pH adjustment in ETP processes, and ion exchange resin regeneration in boiler water treatment. Procuring HCl from external suppliers creates cost volatility and logistics vulnerability — particularly for mills in inland locations or African markets with limited chemical distribution infrastructure.
Rajshree Group's on-site HCl plants produce 30–33% industrial-grade hydrochloric acid through the direct synthesis route (combining hydrogen and chlorine gases over a catalyst in a synthesis furnace, then absorbing the resulting HCl gas in water). This process delivers a consistent, high-purity product without the transportation risks associated with importing bulk acid.
For mills with an integrated chlor-alkali plant — producing chlorine electrolytically from brine — the HCl plant can be positioned to absorb tail gas from the chlor-alkali unit, producing acid at minimal incremental cost. Rajshree designs HCl synthesis plants as standalone units or integrated into wider chlorine chemical systems including ClO₂ and sodium chlorate plants.
Rajshree's HCl synthesis plants produce acid at 30–33% concentration with iron content below 5 ppm — meeting the purity requirements for pulp acid washing without further treatment. Consistent on-site production eliminates the quality variation sometimes experienced with purchased acid from multiple suppliers.
